we respect [some of] your privacy

The Dems have live chats scheduled with some high profile Democrats over the week. As much as I'd like to ask Al Franken how it felt to take down that Libertarian heckler in New Hampshire, I'm really not that psyched on the sheer amount of personal information that needs to be provided just to be able to "chat."

The DNC respects your privacy. We will not give, sell or rent your email address to any other organization unless you specifically authorize us. We treat your name, city, state and any comments as public information. We may, for example, provide compilations to national leaders, without disclosing email addresses. We may also make this information available to the press and public online.

I thought the great thing about chat was that it could be semi-anonymous. Anyone who knows my first name and town pretty much knows exactly who I am. Speaking of which, I should be on AIM as dncblogger this week. Please feel free to say hello. I don't even need your mailing address. Posted by jessamyn at July 25, 2004 07:31 AM

Actually, the personal info they ask is the exact same stuff they ask when you join the DNC and the exact same info they request when you join Kicking Ass, the DNC blog. I've been blogging on KA for a year now and haven't had any black helicopters in my backyard yet.

It's no big deal, of course they want to send out the same fundraising requests that you get when you join any political campaign. This is after all a political organization, not a media organization. One always has the option of putting phony contact info down -- which our resident trolls (and they are numerous) arlready do.

Lighten up, folks.

What's AIM? Did you mean AirAmerica?
BTW, I live in the 1-4 corridor of Florida where we don't have the Air America broadcast. We bought the satellite service for home and car. It's been a great change of mood to have good smart radio at the ready all the time.

I remember that bit with Franken. I hope the Dems come up with better spokespeople. Hitting a guy from behind; (how do you defend the first ammendment by depriving someone of it?), just shows what a deluded cokehead he is.

Better spend more time around the Reference Desk. The guy Al Franken blindsided in Jan. was not a Libertarian, he was a Lyndon LaRouche supporter. Neither LaRouche nor his supporters are libertarians or Libertarians (party members). The fact that both 'Libertarian' and 'LaRouche' start with 'L' does NOT establish equivalence. In point of fact, LaRouche has always run as a Democrat. You may not want him, but he's yours all the same.

I hope to see the bloggers out there (at BOTH conventions) paying attention to the topics that get ignored by the newshandlers and arrangement specialists, out of a pathetic and trembling fear that something unscripted might happen.
