[link to it] 15Sep04 . . . . some bad pending legislation

While we're on the subject, let's talk about some bad pending legislation that could affect libraries, privacy or access to information

  • The INDUCE Act - criminalizing copyright violating software/hardware [bill/commentary]
  • new FOIA exemptions [commentary]
  • Family Movie Act - allowing software censoring of DVDs without copyright violations [news article]
  • CAPPSII - profiling passengers [eff info]
  • US v. Councilman - email privacy rehearing sought [news article]
  • various SPY acts [commentary]
There is some good news, however, section 215 of the USA PATRIOT Act will "sunset" a scant fifteen months from now along with many other parts of the USAPA.

The Librarians Against Bush web site was launched on Independence Day and contains top notch sets of links and information ot help mobilize librarians [and educate everyone] about some of the harmful policies of the Bush administration.

[link to it] 25Apr04 . . . . King & King "not what God wants"
Religious parent objects to public library kids book "King & King" being on a shelf where kids can find it.
"By him finding that book and asking why two men were kissing in it, I had to tell him about the two men being gay, which is something we disagree with and not what God wants" [thanks eoin]
[link to it] 21Apr04 . . . . bush tinkers with archivists
I swear I did not start this day thinking "let's think of some crappy things going on for NLW" but it is turning out that way huh? Next up is news that President Bush is agressively trying to replace the current Archivist of the United States with his own hand-picked replacement before his Dad's papers are subject to disclosure via the Presidential Records Act. There is also talk that he may not want some of the 9/11 Commission's records released. The Society for American Archivists is concerned. [thanks jes]
[link to it] 10Nov03 . . . . after all, we know kids NEVER go to the library, right?
Elementary school teacher accused of child abuse [duct taping children to the blackboard] in Florida gets to work in the school library while she is awaiting trial. [thanks natalia]
[link to it] 31Oct03 . . . . shut up and what?
As per usual, it's good to remember that not all patrons appreciate our anti-PATRIOT Acts. In fact some don't even seem to understand what we do for a living....
Okay librarians, let's get this straight. You stack books in a building for a living. Are we clear? You run books under that beeping thing and give them to those of us who are too cheap to buy them in stores. You are not arbiters of free speech, the Constitution or our freaking civil rights.
