BOSTON, July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a transcript of a speech by The Honorable Gregory Meeks at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday, July 28, 2004:

Eighteen months ago, I sought a candidate who could unite our party, and unite America. And, because my Southeastern Queens district is in the city that was attacked on 9/11, I wanted a candidate who knew how to protect America. I wanted a candidate who would wage a winning war against terrorism, a candidate who would make America safe, not just safer. I say to you tonight that John Kerry is that candidate!

He is what America needs: a new direction in policy and new leadership in the White House. I've seen his strength of character, judgment, and conviction in action. I've seen John Kerry engage voters and their issues all across America. I've seen him interact with his fellow Vietnam veterans. And when I did, I saw a man of courage who knows that wars should always be the last resort, never the first option.

In his first Presidential decision, John Kerry chose in Senator John Edwards a Vice Presidential running mate who will exert every ounce of his energy to help unite and excite America. A Kerry-Edwards administration will empower ordinary Americans at home and restore America's respect abroad. In a Kerry-Edwards White House, those who have been excluded-minorities, the poor, the unemployed, the uninsured, and especially the middle class-will be included.

John Kerry and John Edwards will regain the world's respect for our country by rebuilding our alliances. They will make America stronger by reinvesting in minority communities, reinvigorating inner cities, revitalizing rural areas, and restoring fiscal responsibility. They will encourage minority entrepreneurs, enforce civil rights, and ensure civil liberties. They will not simply talk about quality education and health care for all Americans, they will fight for solutions. They will create good jobs right here at home.

Our country has endured four years of deception, diversion, and division by a so-called compassionate conservative. He may be conservative, but he governs without compassion. Enough!

John Kerry and John Edwards have the values and the vision to "let America be America, again." John Kerry and John Edwards will unite us across race and region, gender and generations, opinion and orientation. I ask all Americans to heed their call. Support this ticket! Let's reclaim our country! Let's revive the American dream! Because under John Kerry and John Edwards, our dreams and the dreams we have for our children can come true!
