The Honorable Robert Matsui Democratic National Convention Tuesday, July 27, 2004 BOSTON, July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a transcript of a speech by the honorable Robert Matsui at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, July 27, 2004: When I was a young man, I wanted to be an architect. I wanted to build things. As you can see, I ended up on a different path-but I'm still working to build something: With your help, I want to build a new Democratic majority. A new majority that brings with it a new commitment to America's security. A new majority that brings with it a passion for the families who are looking for good jobs with good benefits. A new majority that shares our commitment to providing America's children an opportunity to attend good public schools-and then go to college, and guarantees our seniors a retirement with dignity after a lifetime of work. A new majority that makes the House of Representatives- once again-the people's house. I have no doubt that we're going to make John Kerry and John Edwards the next president and vice president of the United States. And when they report for work in the White House I want them sending their policies-America's priorities-down Pennsylvania Avenue to the first woman speaker of the House- Speaker Nancy Pelosi. President Kerry, Vice President Edwards, Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader Daschle-those are leaders who will speak for all Americans, work for all Americans, and build a better America. What do we need to build this new majority? Two seats in the Senate, just eleven of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives, and one new president. And already we're seeing positive signs of a majority in the making. Just look at this year's special elections. In South Dakota, a state where President Bush got 60 percent of the vote, Stephanie Herseth won. In Kentucky, a state where George Bush got 56 percent of the vote, Ben Chandler won. There's a reason we're winning. It's because people don't care about red states or blue states. They care about a stronger America, expanded opportunity, and a brighter future, and that's what we intend to provide. We've got the best organization, the best candidates, the best ideas, and together, we're going to build a new majority.
