Sen. John Breaux's Speech Before the 2004 DNC /EMBARGOED FOR RELEASE UPON DELIVERY OF SPEECH, SCHEDULED FOR 5:53 P.M. EDT TODAY, JULY 29/ Remarks as Prepared BOSTON, July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a transcript of a speech by Sen. John Breaux at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, July 29, 2004: Ladies and Gentlemen: It is a distinct honor and privilege to come before this great convention and recommend to you the next Vice-President of the United States of America - JOHN EDWARDS. I am a Louisianian, and when I was first asked what would it be like to have a vice-president who had a southern accent? I said, "What accent?" He is a true son of the South, but the truth is John Edwards can speak to all Americans -- in every part of America -- regardless of the accent he has ... ! John Edwards can speak to the single mom who is raising two children and struggling to get by with less than a livable wage. John Edwards can speak to the family farmer who wonders if his farm will still be around next year. John Edwards can speak to the factory worker who wonders why he's being laid off, why he's losing his health insurance and why his products are now being built overseas. John Edwards can speak to the mom and dad with a son or daughter in Iraq who can't help but wonder: "Was this the right thing, was this the right time and was this the right way? And John Edwards can speak to those who are the unfortunate and forgotten Americans. He can give them hope that one day -- with a new government and new leadership -- they too will be part of the American Dream and not part of that other America, isolated and neglected and ignored. Like John Kerry, John Edwards is a man we can trust to make the right decisions about war and peace in these perilous times. Like John Kerry, John Edwards understands that we need strong alliances as well as a strong military capable of fighting a war that will bring the battle to our enemies before they bring it to us. And like John Kerry, John Edwards has the visionary leadership to peek around corners, to recognize looming threats before they strike, and to offer bold solutions to ensure all Americans are safe here at home. The life story of John Edwards is like so many in America. He was the son of a mill worker who grew up understanding the pain a young child feels when his family is treated differently because they don't have much money, even though they play by the rules and work hard each and every day. He speaks for all Americans who desire "One America" with equal opportunities for everyone. When John Edwards speaks, the forgotten American can listen and smile because of the hope that John's optimism brings. America is a country that radiates hope and opportunity. It is now time that we have political leaders who guarantee hope and opportunity to all Americans -- not just the privileged few. It is now time to elect the Kerry-Edwards ticket. It is now time to elect John Edwards as America's next Vice-President of the United States. Ladies and Gentlemen, I enthusiastically second the nomination of John Edwards as the next Vice-President of the United States.
